Researchers who wish to get involved in the competition need to follow the following steps:

In order to participate in the competition and download the dataset you must register by the 1st of October 2014.

The following information will be provided to competition participants:'
•	Image set A: 30 jpg face images showing the previous facial appearance of the subjects. The names of the files in set A are 1A.jpg, 2A.jpg . . . 30A.jpg.
•	Landmarks for set A: A set of 68 landmarks located on key facial features on each image in set A. A file containing the coordinates of the landmarks will be provided for each image in set A. The names of the point files in set A are 1A.txt, 2A.txt . . . 30A.txt. The locations of the landmarks are shown below

''Step 3- Submission of Results''

Competition participants will be requested to submit the followuing items by 1/9/2014:
•	Predictions for image set B: 30 greyscale face images showing the current facial appearance of the subjects shown in set A. The names of the submitted images must be 1B.jpg, 2B.jpg . . . 30B.jpg.
•	Predicted Landmarks for set B:  For each submitted image a file with the coordinates of the 68 landmarks must be submitted. The format of the files and the point ordering must be the same as the .lps files provided.  The names of the submitted point files must be 1B.lps, 2B.lps . . . 30B.lps.
•	A short description of the age progression methodology used for generating the age progression images. Descriptions should be around 800 words including a list of relevant references and related figures. It should be noted that the participants of the competition may use any training dataset for training their algorithms (i.e., MORPH , FG-NET).
•	A statement stating explicitly if the submitted images were generated without or with human intervention. In the case of completely automatic age progression methods, competitors may be requested to provide executables. Possible submissions that include images generated completely or partly though human intervention (i.e., by age progression artists) will not be disqualified as this case will provide important clues in  comparing the abilities of machines or humans to generate  accurate age progressed images. However, in the case of submissions involving images manipulated by artists, competitors will be required to state explicitly the methodology adopted and the software tools used (i.e. photoshop).

''Step 4- Anouncement of results''

A report describing the results of the evaluation will be made available to all competition participants who will have the chance to submit comments.


''Step 5- Preparation of a joined paper''

A  paper describing the  organization, benchmark dataset and results of the competition will be submitted to FG2015. It is expected that ''all researchers who enter the competition with valid submissions will be co-authors of the submitted paper''. 

For the purposes of the evaluation, a dedicated database will be used. The database contains 30 pairs of images showing the same person at a different age. The first image in in each pair (image A) shows the face of a subject as captured in the past whereas the second image (image B) shows the current facial appearance of a subject. Images in set B were captured in a way that minimizes non-aging variation between each image. Along these lines face images, in each pair, were captured using similar lighting, face orientation, and facial expression. An indicative pair of images A and B per person (not actual images from the dataset) are shown below.

The dataset includes images from both genders. In some cases images show faces with beards and/or spectagles. Indicatively the ages of subjects in sets A (source) and B (target) range between 1-40 years and 10-80 years respectively. On average the age difference between pairs of images in sets A and B is about 24 years. 

Part A of the dataset will be made available to researchers who register for the competition by the 1st of June 2015.

The performance of each algorithm/methodology submitted will be evaluated based on the overall similarity between the faces in the submitted images and the faces in the ground truth images from set B. In particular three types of tests will be run: 

''Test 1 - Image similarity'': Image features will be derived from the submitted images and compared with the corresponding features derived from the images in set B. Since faces in set B resemble the imaging conditions of faces in set A, it is expected that submitted images will also display similar imaging conditions as the ground truth images, facilitating in that way the process of comparing faces. The actual features to be used during the comparison include Local Binary Patterns [1], Spatial Histogram of Key-points [2], Histograms of Oriented Gradients [3]  and Active Appearance Model Parameters [4]. All four types of features will be used in the evaluation in order to provide performance indicators for different aspects of a face. 

''Test 2 - Classification Test'': A reference dataset that includes the 30 images from set B and 82 images from the FGNET aging database was constructed. The 82 images from the FGNET aging dataset include one randomly selected face image per subject. During the evaluation process, the similarity between each submitted image against all images from the reference dataset will be estimated. The classification order of the correct images will be recorded, indicating the ability of an algorithm to produce an image of a person that looks similar to the target face, when compared with all images from the reference set.

''Test 3 – Test with Human Observers'':  A study involving human expertise will be set up. Along these lines each image from set B, along with the submitted images for that person, will be shown to a number of volunteers who will be asked to select the image that looks most similar to the target image. The study will involve between 30 to 50 persons non-experts in the area of image processing. It should be noted that in the case that the numbers of competitors is high, test 3 will only involve the best five algorithms  as indicated by the results of Test 1 and Test 2.

The Age Progression Competition takes place in the framework of the 11th IEEE International Conference on Automatic Face and Gesture Recognition ([[FG 2015|http://www.fg2015.org]]) which will be held in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

A  paper describing the  organization, benchmark dataset, and results of the competition will be submitted to [[FG 2015|http://www.fg2015.org]]. It is expected that ''all researchers who enter the competition with valid submissions will be co-authors of the submitted paper''. 

The topic of face-aging received increased attention by the computer vision community during the recent years. This interest is motivated by the important real life applications where accurate age progression algorithms can be used. Such applications include the development of person identification systems robust to aging variation and the generation of accurate predictions of the current appearance of missing persons. 

A major consideration pertaining to the development of improved age progression algorithms is the formulation of performance evaluation protocols that can be used for obtaining accurate performance evaluation results for different algorithms reported in the literature. However, unlike other face image processing evaluation schemes, the evaluation of age progression algorithms requires the definition of application-specific performance evaluation metrics, coupled with the existence of dedicated datasets. 

Towards this end we organize the, first ever, independent age progression performance evaluation. The aim of this competition is to provide a framework that could motivate and support research in the  area of age progression.

The evaluation involves the use of a purpose built dataset showing pairs of age separated face images of different individuals. Perspective participants in the competing will be provided with one image of a subject per pair (dataset A) and the age difference between the two images in the pair (see figure below).

 Based on this information participants will be asked to predict the appearance of the face at the target age. A set of dedicated performance evaluation metrics capable of estimating the appearance difference between age progressed and target images will be used for evaluating the performance of different algorithms. Apart from machine-based evaluation, a human-based evaluation scheme will also going to be staged.
